Flight crews - pilots and flight attendants - are the most visible occupations in the industry, but most air transportation employees work on the ground. Except for pilots and aircraft mechanics, most employees are trained after they are hired. Air transportation personnel must be able to work flexible schedules. Some personnel may work under pressure to meet flight schedules.

Q: Since commercial airlines operate around the clock, do most pilots and flight attendants have to work irregular hours?
A: Flight assignments are usually based on seniority. Most pilots and flight attendants fly about 75 hours a month and spend about 75 to 85 hours a month performing nonflying duties. This often includes nights, holidays, and weekends. It also includes much time away from home.
