Chapter 4: Key to Success

Newspaper Activities for Brain Freeze

1. Compare the front page of The News-Journal and The Salt Lake Tribune. On the Web, go to nieworld.com and click on Today´s Front Pages. Once there, click on the Map View tab at the top of the page. (Be sure your pop-up blocker is temporarily turned off.) Run your pointer over the buttons on the map of Utah until The Salt Lake Tribune´s front page appears on the right and then, click your mouse. An enlarged version will appear. Click on Take a closer look...to read and print a copy of the front page. Follow the same steps, using the map of Florida, to get and print The News-Journal´s front page. (Sunshine State Standards: SS.A.1.2, S.S.B.1.2, SS.C.2.2)

2. The students in the story saw various groups of people exercising their right to assemble. From The News-Journal, clip photos and articles showing intentional gatherings of people. Discuss with family or classmates a time when you were part of a group with a common purpose or cause. (Sunshine State Standard: SS.C.2.2)

3. Check the GO! Section in the Friday News-Journal for listings of local museums. If possible, go to some with friends and/or family. Draw a picture to help you remember a special feature. Tell others about what you saw. (Sunshine State Standards: VA.E.1.2)
