Newspaper Activities for Brain Freeze

1. Compare the online versions of today´s News-Journal and the Juneau Empire. On the Web, go to nieworld.com and, on the left sidebar, find NAA (Newspaper Association of America). Under NAA, click on Newspaper sites - National. Once there, click on the map of Alaska. Scroll down, click on Juneau Empire, and print page 1 of the site. Follow the same steps, using the map of Florida, to get to and print page 1 of The News-Journal´s site. (Sunshine State Standards: SS.A.1.2, S.S.B.1.2, SS.C.2.2)

2. In this chapter, even in the face of increased challenges, the kids were determined to solve the puzzle and prove themselves worthy of the prize. From The News-Journal, clip articles that show young people working together to solve problems. With family or classmates, select a problem facing your class, school or community and try to help solve it. (Sunshine State Standards: SS.C.2.2)

3. The dog, Patsy Ann is a mascot, of sorts, for Juneau, Alaska. From the sports pages of The News-Journal, collect illustrations of and references to sports mascots.
