Newspaper Activities for Brain Freeze

1. Compare the online version of today´s News-Journal and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. On the Web, go to nieworld.com and, on the left sidebar, find NAA (Newspaper Association of America). Under NAA, click on Newspaper sites - National. Once there, click on the map of Hawaii. Scroll down, click on Honolulu Star-Bulletin, and print page 1 of the site. Follow the same steps, using the map of Florida, to get to and print page 1 of The News-Journal´s site. Sunshine State Standards: SS.A.1.2, S.S.B.1.2, SS.C.2.2)

2. In this chapter, the students used many kinds of technology to help solve their problems and achieve their goals. Clip, from The News-Journal, articles about new technologies. Then, alone or with a team of friends, select a problem and use your imaginations to design a technology product to deal with that problem. Send your creation to nie@nieworld.com for possible publication on the Web. (Sunshine State Standards: SC.H.1.2, SC.H.3.2)

3. As the students discovered in this chapter, the word QUEEN is a rather commonly used word. Queens and other types of royalty are often covered in the news. Over the period of a week challenge your friends to a game of Royalty. Play by finding royal titles in The News-Journal. Make a chart showing each title and the following information about where it appeared: the date, section, page and headline. The one with the longest list is the winner. (Sunshine State Standards: LA.A.2.2, LA.B.2.2)
