Newspaper Activities for Brain Freeze

1. Compare the online version of today´s News-Journal and The Washington Post. On the Web, go to nieworld.com and, on the left sidebar, find NAA (Newspaper Association of America). Under NAA, click on Newspaper sites - National. Once there, click on the map of D.C. Scroll down, click on The Washington Post, and print page 1 of the site. Follow the same steps, using the map of Florida, to get to and print page 1 of The News-Journal´s site. (Sunshine State Standards: SS.A.1.2, S.S.B.1.2, SS.C.2.2)

2. In this chapter, the students considered the importance of the 1st Amendment Right to Petition the government for help. Using The News-Journal, make a display of articles that show citizens asking the Federal government for help. With classmates or family, discuss the merits of one or more of the situations. (Sunshine State Standards: SS.C.2.2)

3. In the Capitol Rotunda, the students explored the statues of many local heroes. Find a story in The News-Journal about a local hero and design a statue reflecting--or write a poem describing-his or her achievements.
