1. In this chapter, Katie mobilizes the kids to help clean up the environment by picking up trash along the river. Watch your newspaper for information about community projects needing volunteers for October 28, Make a Difference Day. Use an internet search engine to find information about local coastal clean ups. With friends, classmates or family plan to participate and send a report about your efforts to nie@nieworld.com. (Sunshine State Standard SS.C.2.2)

2. In this story, J.J. displays a great deal of knowledge about animal-related science. Over the next weeks, clip from your newspaper, articles that are about science. Then, organize them by subject into a bulletin board or poster to show to classmates. Finally, create a game based on information in the articles and test how much has been learned. (Sunshine State Standard SC.H.3.2)

International Coastal Cleanup
The Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup is the largest and most successful volunteer event of its kind. Each year, thousands of volunteers from around the globe participate, clearing tons of trash from coastlines, rivers and lakes and recording every piece of trash collected.
