— Newspaper Activities —

1. In this chapter, the kids learn more about the hazards that trash poses to wildlife. From your newspaper, clip articles dealing with littering and pollution issues. Then, with friends and/or family create an action plan for cleaning up your school, yard or neighborhood. Take before and after pictures and send them to nie@nieworld.com for possible publication on the Web. (Sunshine State Standard SC.D.2.2)

2. Mr. Stevens tells the kids that he is a member of the Audubon Society. Skim for a schedule of clubs or organizations that focus on nature. With friends or family members, plan to attend one or more meetings. (Sunshine State Standard SC.G.1.2)

Environmental Exploitation: Oceans of Trouble?
Did you know that over two-thirds of our Earth is covered by ocean? These salty seas supply food, wildlife habitat and natural resources such as oil underneath the ocean floor. Oceans also create weather systems that give us rain and they provide opportunities for transportation, commerce and recreation.
