In Volusia County, there is a housing development that has roads commemorating famous military leaders. Colin Kelly Avenue was named in honor of Captain Colin P. Kelly, Jr., America's first hero of World War II. He was credited with attacking and sinking the Japanese battleship Haruna in the Philippines on December 10, 1941. Kelly's B-17 aircraft was hit by enemy fire and Kelly was killed in the crash, but only after he had ordered his crew to bail out. |
