Alphabet Book of the Origin of Place Names

The community of Samsula was originally called Briggsville. The town was on the rail line that ran from Orange City to New Smyrna Beach. The first Briggsville School opened in 1893 according to Volusia County School Board records. In 1912, a second Briggsville School, located on eight acres of what is now 248 Samsula Drive, opened its doors.

The school and community were renamed Samsula in honor of Lloyd Samsula, who was the first World War I veteran to return home to the settlement. Samsula Elementary School is home of the Panthers.
