About the Florida Quest

Florida Quest 2002

An invitation for your class to join the Trackers!

During this caper the Trackers find the real stories behind many fascinating place names in Florida. Why not join in the fun? As a class, create your own ABC list of place names in your community and add it to the Tracker's gallery on the Florida Quest web site. Here's how…

1. Observe… Make a list of the 26 letters of the alphabet and try to find something in your community that begins with each letter. Look at the names of buildings, monuments, roads, towns and bodies of water, etc. around you. For example, a sign saying "Welcome to Daytona Beach" might represent the letter "D." For the letters: Q, X, Y and Z, you may use place names that contain, rather than begin with, those letters.

2. Research… Do research to find how each of those names came to be. Use the web, check in the public library and your Media Center, ask grown-ups, etc. For example: A web search for the origin of the name Daytona Beach (using www.google.com) reveals that it was named for its founder, Mathias Day.

Discussions

3. Record… Write a sentence or two describing the origin of the name. Then, take a snapshot or digital photo of the sign, place or object or make a drawing of it and then take a photograph of the drawing.

4. Publish and Share… Compile your ABC project into a scrapbook, a bulletin board or even a Power Point presentation to display at your school.

Teachers! Send your students' completed ABC photos and descriptions to Nancy Govoni, Newspaper in Education Manager, The Daytona Beach News-Journal, P.O. Box 2831, Daytona Beach, FL 32120-2831, or e-mail entries by following the link at www.nieworld.com/floridaquest/. You do not need to have all 26. Send them as they are completed. Be sure each entry includes the teacher's name and the name of your school. (For home-schoolers, please include a number.) Check the web site often. We will post submissions on the Florida Quest web site for all to see and share.

Please Note: Entries received by May 20, 2002 will be entered into a drawing for special prizes.
