Fourth-grade class digs at 'shipwreck site'

By Linda Weaver | News-Journal Staff Writer

Sandy Funderburke's fourth- grade class at Pine Trail Elementary School participated in a mock marine archaeological dig of a shipwreck site on the school's playground.

The wreck was modeled after the Atocha Spanish ship discovered by Mel Fisher near the Florida Keys.

Bill Pearon, owner of Forecastle Treasures, donated replica items to make the discovery seem authentic. He also loaned treasures he had found on his travels exploring the oceans around the world. Greg Stewart donated shark teeth for each pupil in the class.

The pupils are studying Florida's waterways and famous shipwrecks. While searching for buried treasures, the pupils recorded their finds.

A museum was set up in the classroom to display their treasures. Parents were taken on a mini treasure hunt during Back to School Night and toured the class museum.
