FAST FACT: “Cracker” is a term sometimes used for a Caucasian born on the Florida mainland, usually one who lives off the land in a rural area. The term is sometimes used as a put-down. Its origin is unknown, but folk etymologists have said it might be derived from the cracking sound of corn, or from the cracking of a whip used for driving cattle. Some linguists believe it came from the Gaelic word craic, – pronounced “crack” – and meaning “entertaining conversation, food, music, and so on.” In many parts of the country, the term “cracker barrel” describes a barrel used to keep crackers, for example, in a general store.

Only three towns numbered more than 1,000 – Daytona at 4,542, DeLand at 2,812, and New Smyrna with 1,121. Astor Florida History While Exploring the St. John's River in early 1596, Don Pedro Menendez made the following notes into his diary: "We found the third village of the savages on the West bank, halfway between a very big lake
and a smaller one farther up stream on a likable spot in the shade of formidable trees. The river seems to be full of goodly fish, and the forest inhabited by all kinds of birds and beasts, the meat of which is quite tasty." — http://astorflorida.com/history.htm
