 | Chrisholm Elementary, first called Chrisholm Academy, began in a one-room, frame building as a school for African American children. The school was located in the subdivision of the Sams Estates in New Smyrna Beach. Sometime later, the students attended class in a school comprised of two adjoining houses. |
When one of the houses burned, Leroy Chrisholm, the owner of the dwellings, constructed and donated a two-story, framed building located in the 500 block on Washington Street. (Besides owning tracts of land in the area, Chrisholm was a barber by profession and lived on Riverside Drive in New Smryna Beach). |
