[The man] leaned forward and looked sternly at the children. “And what were you doing out in the Preserve after dark?”
Marisol spoke up and saved him. “We were hiking,” she said proudly.
The man nodded, and Rico breathed a sigh of relief. It was always better to tell the truth. But this wasn’t the whole truth. Nobody but Rico knew that the reason for his hike was to spy on the stranger seated in front of him.
