Chapter Fourteen Sunday, June 25, 2000 'CANE WISE MEANS BE PREPAREDSTAFF REPORT As we progress through hurricane season, the American Red Cross has issued a list of activities residents should undertake to prepare for these seasonal storms. Prepare an evacuation plan. Such a plan should include a list of several possible places where you can stay, including friends or relatives, a motel or a shelter. It should also include phone numbers to these places to ensure they are available before you arrive. Prepare for a hurricane These preparations should include putting together a hurricane survival kit with needed foods, medicines, batteries, a battery-powered radio, a can opener, bottled water and a fire extinguisher. Also have the supplies needed to board up your home on site well in advance of the storm so you will not be caught short by possible shortages when the time comes. Know about hurricanes. A hurricane watch means a storm may hit the area. A watch generally is issued when there is the threat of hurricane conditions in the next 24 or 36 hours. A hurricane warning means a storm is likely headed to the area and will arrive within 24 hours. A hurricane is described as having winds in excess of 74 mph, dangerous tides and large surge. Residents in the warning area should prepare their property for a storm immediately. As a storm approaches Those in the storm zone should listen to radio or television for updated information and potential evacuation orders. Prepare property by bringing in all loose items that might be thrown by hurricane force winds. Fill your car with gas. If ordered to evacuate, do so as soon as possible. Once the storm passes. Use care when going outside because of fallen power lines, broken glass, debris and emergency vehicles on the roadways. Listen to the media for instructions and information.
