The Spruce Creek Fly-In Airplane and Toy Parade, which took place Saturday on the grounds of this private gated community west of Port Orange, may be the only one of its kind in the country if not the world.

The weather couldn't have been better as the Spruce Creek Fly-In community had its much-anticipated Airplane and Toy Christmas Parade Saturday. Hundreds of Fly-In residents and neighbors lined the taxiways and runway to observe and enjoy the world's only known event of its kind.

Roy Shannon is accustomed to heads turning as he carefully tows what looks like a chopped-up white airplane down U.S. 1 behind his white Volkswagen Beetle. This “portable” aircraft, he proclaims proudly, is “the cheapest airplane in this part of Florida.”

Group treats youngsters to free flights
Rebecca Fleet could not stop giggling as a pilot loaded her into a blue and white single-engine plane. The 10-year-old girl, who has cerebral palsy, clutched a stuffed rabbit as she waved wildly to her mother from the back of the small aircraft.
