Thursday, June 1, 2000 Just passing through, bear gives town a storyNEWS-JOURNAL STAFF REPORT DELAND — A full-grown black bear moseyed through downtown DeLand Wednesday night, stopping by Checkers and the Putnam Hotel on his way out of town. A black bear crosses the Volusia County School Board Administration Center's parking lot near Wisconsin Avenue just west of North Clara Avenue on Wednesday evening, May 31, 2000. DeLand police followed the creature on his circuitous route but were loath to mess with it. Their main goal, officers said, was making sure the bear didn't come into contact with any humans. "He's federally protected," said Cpl. Dave Hiers. "We're not doing anything to him." The officers were not sure where the bear entered town but said it was heading west, probably toward the woods across State Road 15A. "We're just trying to make sure he keeps going," Hiers said. "He's just looking to go home." The bear roamed around the police and fire stations on Howry Avenue and walked past the American Legion building before scampering across New York Avenue toward the Putnam Hotel, his claws skittering on the pavement. Calls about the bear started coming into the police station around 9 p.m., and the beast was on his way out of town shortly after 10 p.m. "He was just moseying," Hiers said. "(Bears) come into town all the time. It's not that unusual."
