DAYTONA BEACH — Some area students who take part in this year's Groundhog Job Shadow Day will get to spend Friday at Best Buy. Those youngsters will get the inside scoop on the making of a compact disc.

They also will find out how their telephone skills and computer abilities measure up to what's expected in the business world, said John Molitor, store manager.

More than 100,000 businesses nationwide are expected to take part in the annual observance.

This year's version of the job-shadowing program, however, runs longer than a single day. It's a year-long effort to give students various on-the-job experiences and a curriculum that ties academics to the workplace.

The program is a joint effort of America's Promise-- The Alliance for Youth, the National School-to-Work Office, Junior Achievement and the American Society of Association Executives. Monster.com is the national anchor sponsor of Job Shadow Day. The online service provider also will be offering virtual job shadowing for students interested in learning about the education and experience needed for jobs ranging from astronaut to zoologists.

Best Buy is among several national retailers participating in the project within Volusia County. Others include Wal-Mart, Buca di Beppo, The Gap and Home Depot.

Bridget Barton, personnel manager at the Wal-Mart SuperCenter in Ormond Beach, said students who visit that store will learn about shipping and receiving. They'll also see how managers make decisions on which merchandise to spotlight.throughout the store. They also will learn more about the deli operations, among other things, she said.
