Milan Skrtic, Diana Daugharty and David Held received their awards in an Atlantic High School ceremony that recognized the contributions of 12,200 volunteers who provided 575,000 hours of service to Volusia schools this year. Skrtic, named outstanding senior volunteer, is a retired aerospace engineer who works on math, science and computer skills with New Smyrna Beach Middle School pupils, using the stock market as a springboard to develop their understanding of fractions and ratios. Daugharty, a senior at Taylor Middle-High School in Pierson, volunteered in a variety of school and community activities. She's been involved in 4-H and Future Farmers of America at both the county and school levels, was a tutor and peer mediator at Taylor and volunteered with a fifth-grade class at McInnis Elementary in DeLeon Springs. Held is a former New York City police officer who now lives in Deltona and volunteers in several roles at Osteen Elementary, Heritage Middle School and Deltona High. Held is president of Osteen's PTA, coordinator of business partnerships at Osteen and Heritage and mentor for a Deltona High student. He's also chairman of Volusia schools' district advisory committee. Three volunteer-teacher teams also received special recognition at Thursday's ceremony. Pathways Elementary teacher Jane Roberts and volunteer Martin Hadley received their award for setting up a math lab for fourth- and fifth-graders. Sharing the elementary team award with Pathways were teachers Genevieve Chywski and Melissa Miller and volunteers James Kirby and Patricia Perry, all of Volusia Pines Elementary in Lake Helen. They established a book club through which children write, illustrate, design and compile books. Honored as the secondary school teacher-volunteer team were teacher Roger Billings and volunteer Christine Keltz for a mock presidential election program they developed last fall at Heritage Middle School in Deltona. The mother-daughter team of Samsula Elementary volunteer Madeline May and teacher Lynn Morris earned honorable mention for a program that combines tutoring for identified pupils and providing support and educational materials to teachers and parents.
