Meet Jerome Lemelson, the most prolific
inventor of the modern era

How long does it take a person to receive 583 patents? If you average one patent per month for 48 years, then you´ll come close to Jerome´s total. Many of his patents became commercial successes, which is remarkable considering that fewer than 2 percent of all patents ever produce a profit for the inventor!

Newspaper Connection for Students:

1. Search The Daytona Beach News-Journal for stories that contain any of the following words: patent, invention or inventor.

2. Cut these stories out and keep them in a notebook or scrapbook.

3. Look up the definition of each word in a dictionary and write them down in your notebook or scrapbook. This will help you learn more about the whole process of inventing.

“Don´t cut back on basic research. It´s necessary to the future of this country.” -- Jerome Lemelson, holder of 583 patents
