Celebrate Black History Month with these inventors

So who invented Black History Month? And why was February chosen as the month to celebrate it?

Newspaper Connection for Students:

1. Working with two of your classmates, search The Daytona Beach News-Journal for examples of three minorities who achieved greatness. They can be local people or famous people.

2. In your notebook or scrapbook, explain what each one accomplished and how he or she accomplished it. Also explain what obstacles he or she had to overcome.

Elijah McCoy, a Canadian inventor born in 1844 to former slaves, came up with the automatic oiling cup for trains. It became known as The Real McCoy when engineers began asking for it by name. He also patented over fifty inventions.
