Chapter Eight - Good-bye, Mr. President

Every weekday morning, Mrs Potter and Peggy would sit on the porch. Mrs. Potter would read out loud all the stories about presidents.

Classroom Extensions

1. Which President was the “Father of His Country?” Why was he called this?

2. Do you think Peggy ever got to see Mr. Roosevelt on the mountain? Write a poem about Mount Rushmore and the four Presidents.

Newspaper Activities

1. Peggy was feeling sad at having to leave her mountain and her new friends. Look through the ads in The News-Journal and clip out a picture of an item you think would make a good-bye gift from Peggy to her new friend, Mrs. Potter. Mount the clipping on a nice piece of paper and, below it, write a note or poem about the value of friendship. Then give it to someone you care about.

2. From the pages of The News-Journal, select a modern-day newsmaker that you think should be included on Mt. Rushmore. Write a paragraph or poem or draw a picture expressing your feelings about that person. Send it to nieworld.com for possible publication. Be sure to include your name and telephone number.
