Chapter Four - Getting Acquainted

Looking out the window at the face on the mountain, Peggy smiled and said, “Good morning, Mr. President.”

Classroom Extensions

1. Peggy learned how the Black Hills got their name. How did Mount Rushmore get its name?

2. Draw a picture of a Ponderosa pine tree and a picture of a Black Hills spruce. Which tree grows taller? Can you name three other species of pine or spruce trees?

Newspaper Activities

1. The Black Hills got their name from the dark needles and bark of the Ponderosa pines that covered their lower slopes. Clip pictures of trees from The News-Journal and glue them to a poster board to create your own forest. In the background, draw a mountain with the faces of four famous or familiar people you would like to honor. Share your work with classmates, friends or family.

2. After hearing about an interesting neighbor who helps people but who likes to be alone, Peggy concludes that she was sure that they would get along just fine. From The News-Journal, clip pictures and articles of seniors helping others. With the help of your teacher or parents, write and send a letter thanking them for what they did.
