Chapter Two - A BIG Surprise

Peggy woke up not sure where she was. Nothing looked familiar. Then she remembered. This was South Dakota.

Classroom Extensions

1. How many United States Presidents have there been? In what years did Mr. Washington and Mr. Jefferson and Mr. Lincoln become President?

2. Mike stood on the car´s running board. What is a running board? What do you think Peggy meant when she said she could “feel it in her bones?”

Newspaper Activities

1. Cut pictures of mountains from issues of The News-Journal. Arrange them into a Mountain Montage. With classmates, friends or family find the location of each on a map of the world and discuss which ones you would most like to visit and why.

2. Because the U. S. is holding a presidential election this year, The News-Journal is full of information about the candidates. Create a bulletin board or notebook of clippings of interesting articles and cartoons about them. Then share your collection with classmates, friends or family and decide whom you would vote for if you were old enough.
