The turn of the 21st century was the perfect time to review the past, embrace the present and prepare for the future. The Daytona Beach News-Journal´s Then & Again calendar was designed with all three of these elements in mind. News-Journal Photo Chief Jim Tiller selected 13 classic photographs from an extensive archive collection. He chose popular sites throughout the circulation area that were taken prior to 1940 and then assumed the task of returning to those sites and, where possible, taking new photographs from the exact same angles and locations. The intent was to illustrate how much has changed from then to now. As an added touch, several moments in history that exemplified the diversity of events that made up the past 100 years were included. Teachers...Feel free to print out any or all of these past and present pictures of our community and use them with your classes. Below are some suggested NIE activities using the photos. Please send us your ideas and we will add them to this list. Photos by month and locationDecember 1999: The beach Social Studies Activities1. Cut the old pictures apart and have the students put them in chronological order. Have others concur/challenge and defend their views. Do research to add a timeline of corresponding events in local history. 2. Have students select a place pair and ask them to draw what they think the site will look like 50 years from now. Arrange them into a past, present and future display and invite other classes to view the exhibit. 3. Have students select pictures from current editions of The News-Journal that show local sites and/or activities. Ask them to go back or ahead in time and illustrate the same scene. Create your own classroom calendar. 4. Have the students treat the old photos as artifacts from an earlier time. After studying the photos, make a list of facts and inferences about life then. 5. Study the photos pairs for clues to how the economy of the area has changed or has not changed and why? Language Arts Activities1. Have the students select a photo and create a poem to go with it. Have others guess which photo inspired the poem. 2. Have the students imagine that they are one of the objects or people in the old picture. Then have them write a story about what is happening from the point of view of that person/object. 3. Select some of the photos to show to the class. Ask each student or groups of students to create a cutline (caption) that might have run with the picture if it had been printed in The News-Journal. 4. Make a list of all the word you can read in the old and new photos. Then use as many as possible in a crossword puzzle. Calendar Credits: Creative design: Jim Tiller. Photographers: E.G. Harris, R.
