Where the panther's are: VOLUSIA COUNTY

· As the state and counties continue to link large tracts of rural land, such as the Volusia Conservation Corridor, it’s feasible that panthers could move along those connectors. The panther has favored the St. Johns River corridor in the past. One of the last confirmed sightings of a panther outside South Florida was in Volusia County, according to state records.

· A total of 4,620 records were filed in the Florida Panther Record Clearinghouse. The majority of these reports were received from people who called into one of the FGFWFC offices. An average of 268 reports were received per year. Reports were fairly equally divided among the seasons. There were 91 confirmed records from 21 of the 67 counties. However, specimens that were determined to be Florida panthers came from only 4 counties: Collier, Dade, Glades, and Volusia. (Source: The Florida Panther Society)

· In December 1987, a panther skeleton was found by a hunter in the Farmton Wildlife Management Area, in Volusia County. There were fresh panther scrapes and scats nearby, indicating another panther was still alive. Shortly after this, a sample of what appeared to be panther hair was taken from the grill of a car which reportedly had hit a panther. (Source: The Florida Panther Society)
