The News-Journal´s “100 Years of Racing: That Was Then...This Is Now” special sections were designed by Kelly Markowitz, with George Hanns assisting. Covers for the two sections were designed by Markowitz and Scott Hiestand of The News-Journal´s art department.

The sections were edited by Markowitz, Hanns, Bob Pockrass, Jenny Zimmerman, Scott Sterbens, David Markowitz and the news desk. Stories were written by Ken Willis, Godwin Kelly, Pockrass, Buddy Shacklette and Zimmerman.

Additional information was provided from the following books: “Speed on Sand” by William Tuthill; “Daytona: The Quest For Speed” by Tom Tucker and Jim Tiller; “Images of America, Daytona Beach, 100 Years of Racing” by Harold D. Cardwell Sr.; “Racing on the Rim” by Dick Punnett; and “Images of America, Daytona Beach and the Halifax River Area” by Cheryl Atwell and Vincent Clarida.

Special thanks goes to the Halifax Historical Society and John Gontner for their assistance with the research and photos for these sections.

Daytona Beach´s racing history is vast and we have been able to just touch on the highlights of the last century in these sections.

Special Report: 100 YEARS OF RACING
Traveling a long way from establishing land speed records, automobile racing has taken a different turn. Now, due west of the sands where racing began, sleek-bodied stock cars race on the high banks of Daytona International Speedway.
