Chapter Two. A Letter From Dad

Things to think about and do

Classroom Extensions:

1. Larry showed good sportsmanship when he missed the ball. What is good sportsmanship? Have you ever seen someone show poor sportsmanship? What did he or she do?

2. Larry and Mrs. Green has a victory garden. What is a victory garden? Why were they important? List what you would like to grow if you had a garden.

Newspaper Activities:

1. Although Larry is upset when he strikes out during the baseball game, he controls himself in order to show good sportsmanship. Clip articles from The News-Journal that show examples of good and bad sportsmanship and create a Hall of Fame/Shame poster or bulletin board. With classmates, friends or family, discuss how the shameful examples could have been turned into positive examples. (Sunshine State Standard PE.B.2.2)

2. In this chapter, we get a glimpse of a typical supper with Larry and his family. Make a clipping file of recipes from The News-Journal that you would like to sample. With adult help, make one or more and share it with family or friends. Send your favorite recipe to nie@nieworld.com for possible publication on the web. (Sunshine State Standard MA.B.4.2)

Baseball Strike: Fair or Foul?
Although being a professional player may seem glamorous, in reality it´s a lot of hard work. A majority of sports superstars are hardworking and extremely focused. Hero worship aside, many feel that baseball players are just doing a job, like millions and millions of other workers.
