Place: First (Home-delivered NIE program promoted parental involvement in education and newspaper reading while reinforcing classroom NIE lessons and making the newspaper available to disadvantaged families. The newspaper provided extensive curriculum resources as well as NIE training for both the teachers and their substitutes. NIE INFORMATION SERVICE (NIEIS)
2004 -- The Crystal Apple: The highest award in the NIE Information Service Bright Ideas Contest, was awarded to The Daytona Beach News-Journal. Both Nancy Govoni, NIE Manager, and Kristen Sternberg, NIE Home Delivery Manager, were recognized for their efforts in the areas teacher training and web design.
2003 -- The Crystal Apple: The NIE department was recognized in 2003 as the program of distinction, exemplified by four submissions to the contest. Advertising/Promotion of NIE Program, Creative Contests, Community Involvement and Original Curriculum Development.

2003 -- Bright Ideas Contest Winner: "Double Exposure" - Nancy Govoni, NIE Manager, The Daytona Beach News-Journal, Daytona Beach, Florida. The Daytona Beach News-Journal offers two distinct programs using the newspaper and USA WEEKEND in the classroom. One fills a need for reading teachers at the middle and high school level. The other, "Weekend on Wednesdays," involves students and families in the newspaper through the use of the special lesson plans from USA Weekend. www.usaweekend.com
