Dear Boys and Girls, There are so many different ways to learn! today´s story tells you how much I can learn from Wally, even though I´m the Alpha dog and he´s the pup! I love reading, because if you can read, you can learn just about anything. Although Wally doesn´t want to learn to read, he loves to watch TV, especially sports, and he´s a very fast runner. I know I can learn some things from him. We had fun playing football in the rain. Have you ever done that? Your friend, Newspaper Activities1. Woodrow really enjoys the comics. From The News-Journal, clip comics that you think are funny and rate them from 1 to 10. Then, have friends and/or family members rate them. Compare and discuss the results. 2. In this chapter, Woodrow and Wally discuss talented football players. From the News-Journal, clip articles about sports stars you like. Underline words in the stories that describe traits/skills that you admire. Make a plan to develop these qualities in yourself. Woodrow´s Activities1. Watch a television news program. Choose a story that is interesting to you, then read about it in the newspaper. 2. With a partner, share the articles you chose, answering these questions: What did you learn from the televised story? What more did you learn by reading the same story from the newspaper. Choose a different news story from the newspaper. With a partner, create a television report, and each of you present it to your class. (LA.C.3.2.6) The Write Connection1. Pretend you are a newspaper reporter and write a story you think would make a great newspaper feature. 2. Select a sports hero and write a poem about that person. Suggestions for Parents1. Ask your child to tell you what he remembers about learning to read when he first started learning the alphabet. 2. Discuss the challenges he has now compared to the very beginning of his learning. 3. Go through the newspaper and ask your child to select the section he likes most-the Comics, Weather, Front page, etc. 4. Read your child´s favorite article with him and ask him to re-tell the story in his own words relating it to one of his everyday experiences.
