Woodrow learns to read!

Hi Boys and Girls,

Sometimes no matter how hard you try, some people do not like you. It is hard to understand, especially when you are trying to be friendly. When you read the newspaper each day, you find articles about people in other parts of the world who do not like us. We also learn about sad events like wars. Let´s see what we can learn today about getting along with others who are not like us.

Newpaper Activities

1. Go through today´s newspaper and find an article about a person who has a great fear, like Miss Jessie. Use a red pen and underline the words in the article that express fear.

2. Write a sentence to summarize the article.

3. Think of something that could help the person release his/ her fear.

4. With a partner, tell about a time when you were afraid of something, and how you overcame your fear. (LA.A.1.2.4)

1. In this chapter, we learn that, "Woodrow could sense Miss Jessie´s fear." Write a paragraph explaining what this sentence means to you.

2. We read, "This recurring dream puzzled him because he always awoke before he knew how the dream ended." Have you ever had the same dream over and over again? Write about your dreams.


Suggestions for Parents

1. With your child, discuss why Woodrow wants to win Miss Jessie over.

2. Help your child understand "sensitivity," guiding their reading to a newspaper story that shows why it is important to be sensitive to others´ feelings.

3. Talk about how elderly people are treated in your family or culture.

4. Read a newspaper article that shows how different cultures treat the elderly.
