First flight, Dec. 17, 1903.
Distance, 120 feet.
Time, 12 seconds.
Orville Wright at controls.

1. In this chapter the brothers made several flights- one where the plane flew 120 feet in 12 seconds and one where it traveled 852 feet in 59 seconds. Convert those rates into miles per hour. Then from The News-Journal, clip examples of other vehicles and their mph speeds. Be sure to check out the ads for cars and auto racing in the sports section. Make a chart showing a comparison.

2. The author of this serial story paints a moving picture with precise words and phrases, such as “the clattering of the engine,” to help his readers feel as though they are actually present while the story unfolds. Make a list of descriptive words or phrases from The News-Journal that help you feel see, hear, smell or taste what is happening in the story. Write a new story or revise one that you have previously written to include more colorful phrases. Share it with friends or family or send it to nieworld.com for possible publication on the web.

ON THE WEB: The Wright Brothers Flyer -- In 2003, the world celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first flight of an airplane by the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. While much attention was paid to the events of December 17, 1903, it is important to note that the four flights of that day were only one small step in the development of the airplane. The brothers had already invested three years of work between 1900 and 1902 perfecting unpowered gliders and learning to fly. It would take another three years work, from 1903 to 1905, until all the problems of their powered airplane were solved.

ON THE WEB: The 1903 Wright Flyer -- In 1902 the brothers, by then highly proficient in handling a glider, had built their third one. Its construction was based on the results of their own wind tunnel measurements, the accuracy of which convinced them that they were ready to build a machine equipped with an engine.
