The Story of the Wright Brothers

Chapter Eight: Kitty Hawk Bound (September 1900)

Wilbur Wright is traveling from Dayton, Ohio, toward the remote spot he´s chosen to test his glider: the small town of Kitty Hawk, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

1. Boating accidents are often in the news. Over the next weeks, keep a file of related clippings and compare them to Wilbur´s experience aboard the Curlicue. Write a story about what might have happened if they had not found cover in the North River. Send your creation to www.nieworld.com for possible publication on the web.

2. Wilbur survived on the jelly Elizabeth had packed for him. Look through the food ads in The News-Journal and clip items you think Wilbur would have liked. Draw a basket and glue the clippings on. Share your creation with classmates, friends or family.
