Wonderful Flying Machines

The Wright Brothers were interested in flying things. The brothers made several flights – one where the plane flew 120 feet in 12 seconds and one where it traveled 852 feet in 59 seconds. As Otto Lilienthal lay dying after testing his glider, he said, “Sacrifices must be made.”

Activities:

1. Clip articles, ads and photos from The News-Journal of such objects as gliders, kites, birds, butterflies and all other things that fly. Then arrange and paste or glue them into a collage of Fascinating Flyers. Share your creation with classmates, friends and/or family members.

2. Convert the above rates into miles per hour. Then from The News-Journal, clip examples of other vehicles and their mph speeds. Be sure to check out the ads for cars and auto racing in the sports section. Make a chart showing a comparison.

3. Clip from The News-Journal, stories about people who have made sacrifices for causes they believe in. Then, write about a time when you gave up something for a cause you believed in. Share it with classmates or family. If possible send it to nie@nieworld.com for possible publication on the web.

4. The brothers calculated that they would need a fifteen-mile-per-hour wind to keep their glider airborne for testing. Check the weather page in The News-Journal over the next month to see how many days would have been suitable for their test flight.
