The Wright Invention

The Wright Brothers began creating things when they were still in elementary school. When they became adults, the activities of the Wright Brothers were reported on all over the world. The brothers had to use information from both mechanics and engineers. They relied on their experience as mechanics and adapted the bicycle wheel to help test their wing designs. Tables and charts were important to the Wright brothers and they are still used today to show a wide variety of information.

Activities:

1. Find a new invention or discovery reported on in The News-Journal and then see if newspapers from other countries are also reporting on it. To view an online version of such papers go to www.nieworld.com and in the upper right-hand corner, click on Links to International Newspapers. Share your findings with friends and family.

2. Collect as many different types of tables and charts as you can from The News-Journal. Then ask teachers, friends and family members to help you read them.

3. Clip, from The News-Journal, articles about today´s young people who are being creative. Save the clippings in a scrapbook or on a bulletin board and use them for inspiration. Write about something you have created and send your story to nie@nieworld.com for possible publication on the web.

4. Collect articles from The News-Journal that report on experimental objects or procedures. Sort them into categories based on how they will be used, such as in medicine, manufacturing, the military, etc. Graph your findings and discuss the results with classmates or family members.

5. From The News-Journal, cut photos and drawings of things with wheels and things with manmade wings and arrange them into a display. Design and draw your own wing or wheel vehicle and place it at the center.

6. Clips ads and articles from The News-Journal that are about how-to-do-it programs, books, videos, etc. Analyze the content for those statements that are fact and those that are opinions. Separate the clipping into the following groups: seemingly impossible, possible or highly possible, and then chart your findings.

7. The brothers used their knowledge of birds to help analyze how to fly. Over the next weeks, clip pictures and drawing of birds from The News-Journal. Label any of the feather movements and actions observed and used by the Wright brothers.

ERAU trains on the edge -- When Orville and Wilbur Wright launched their Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk, N.C., 100 years ago today, they were on the cutting edge of aviation technology. That´s a familiar feeling for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University students Jennette VanWagoner and John Pottage.
