Problem Solving

Katherine Wright knew that her brothers considered quarrelling a way to challenge each other to solve problems. They also solved problems by enlisting the help of other people to help accomplish their goals. Just like Wilbur Wright, many people today experience and must deal with life-changing injuries.

Activities:

1. From The News-Journal, clip stories that show teamwork in action. Write about a time when you worked with a team and accomplished a goal. Send it to nie@nieworld.com for possible publication on the web.

2. From The News-Journal, clip news stories that tell how people handle such situations. Made a list of things to do, or not do, if you ever find yourself facing a similar challenge.

3. From The News-Journal, clip articles about individuals or groups of people arguing. Identify the stories that seem to involving solving problems and those where there seems to be no problem-solving going on. With friends and/or family discuss both kinds of situations and make a list of ways to resolve problems without conflict. Try out some of those strategies the next time you must solve a problem.

4. Many times Wilbur was the thinker and Orville the doer in the family. Find and clip articles from The News-Journal that illustrate both types of personalities at work. Discuss with classmates, friends or family the positive and negative side of each.

5. The brothers calculated that they would need a fifteen-mile-per-hour wind to keep their glider airborne for testing. Check the weather page in The News-Journal over the next month to see how many days would have been suitable for their test flight.
