WHO - Local businesses which value the quality of education in Volusia and Flagler counties, can have a major impact on students´ learning through a donation to the Volusia or Flagler County School Board in support of The News-Journal NEWSPAPER IN EDUCATION program.

WHAT - The News-Journal´s NEWSPAPER IN EDUCATION program promotes the use of newspapers as an integral part of the academic program. With training and a variety of curriculum resources, teachers make The News-Journal a "living textbook" that features current, real-world information. Using the newspaper on a regular basis helps students develop daily reading habits that they will carry through their lives, bringing them in touch with their community, their nation and their world.

WHEN - Teachers select which day(s) they wish to receive classroom sets of newspapers, usually one or two days weekly. These copies of The News-Journal become the source of in-class activities, assignments and free-reading. Monday, with its Mini Page, is a popular day for elementary students, and middle and high school students use other News-Journal daily issues to great advantage.

WHERE - Public and private schools, community college and adult high school programs, home schools, alternative centers, even correctional facilities use the newspaper in just about every grade level and in a variety of subjects including language arts, science, social studies, mathematics, journalism, special education and technical and vocational programs.

WHY - Newspapers provide a vital link to the real world for students who too often do not realize the value of their academic programs. The study of today´s critical issues, events and people helps pupils understand the past and see a role for themselves in their future world. Student interests, from sports to entertainment, become the arena for practicing basic enrichment skills and understanding concepts as students use statistics and other data to compute, invest and comparison-shop. And the newspaper is recyclable!

HOW - To be a part of this exciting process, call: Kris Sternberg, (386) 681-2436 at The News-Journal.
