The Loggerhead Sea Turtle

The loggerhead sea turtle is an important species that could become extinct. That’s why I would like to get involved and help save this magnificent creature. What I would like to see take place is the development of a curriculum into our school system, at the elementary school level, that would continue through middle school. The program, which would be called Endangered Species Week, would educate children about endangered and threatened species in Florida. It would be a weeklong program incorporated in with other schoolwork. Part of the curriculum in Endangered Species Week would include field studies where the students would learn about one of the endangered species of Florida. For example, when learning about the loggerhead sea turtle we would take a field trip to the beach. The children would spend the day picking up trash along the shoreline and learning how the pollution affects the loggerhead sea turtle. Sometimes the turtles will eat plastic bags and other trash because they resemble one of their favorite snacks, the jellyfish.

I would also like to develop a program, which would be funded by donations from local businesses. The program would teach the adults of the community about some of the ways to help save the loggerhead sea turtle. I would like to set up a monthly meeting through this community program, when we can pick up trash on the beach. Also in the program, you would learn about some of the other ways to help the turtles stay safe such as problems with artificial lights. Lots of turtles die because artificial lights near the beach confuse them. Then there is nature, sometimes raccoons and birds will find some of the hatchlings before they reach the water. When it comes to nature, we cannot help the turtles but we can help them by clearing up humans’ faults. That’s how I plan to take action and save the loggerhead turtle.
