Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
Using photos for wordsIn an effort to inspire my 1st graders to become more creative and detailed writers, I use this simple but different activity: 1. In cooperative groups, students view a News-Journal photo and brainstorm the different parts of speech. 2. The recorder makes a list of all the naming word (nouns), action words (verbs) and describing words (adjectives). 3. Each group shares its findings with the class. (Other group members become reporters and material helpers). In the beginning, a list of nouns might be very general, such as: dog, man or tree. Now, students have learned to be more specific, such as: nose, elbows, fur, paws, branches and bark. *Not only are my students becoming better writers, they are doing so while learning more about their own community through the use of the photos. Thanks, News-Journal! Sharon Grass 1st Grade Port Orange Elementary
