Word Shapes; Alphabet PoemWord shapes: 1. Select an object. (a simple shape works best, for example a house). 2. Find descriptive words or phrases about the subject from The News-Journal. 3. Cut out the words and phrases. 4. Draw the basic shape of the object to work as an outline on 8 ½ x 11 inch paper. 5. Glue or tape the words & phrases following the shape of the object to create the "shape" poem. An example of an idea might be an illustration of a student´s house. Then the student would find words associated with the drawing. (i.e. window, door, grass, comfort, family, stove, refrigerator, basement, Deltona, etc...) The extension of this activity is then for each student to write a descriptive paragraph about his or her home. Alphabet poem: 1. Select a word. (example: write) 2. Find as many descriptive words as you can that describes or relates to the word "write." Cut those words out of the newspaper. 3. Write the word vertically. 4. Select one word from the list that starts with each letter of the word. 5. The student´s goal is to create a descriptive phrase or sentence about the word. 6. A final step is for the student to illustrate the poem. A student might pick words like: dog, cat, horse, leaf, teacher, book, etc...
