Bright Ideas Lesson PlansCurrent Events Word JarIn Intermediate (4th and 5th) advanced academics class at Pierson Elementary, we are involved in a current events project. We look for pictures with a story and identify the Who, What, Where, When, Why, and add a "How do you feel about this" question. We post these stories on an on-going board. We use the New York Times/Learning.com site in addition to the News-Journal. Students use the website as a model and then use the News-Journal to select a picture and article to the 5W´s (and How) themselves. We post these also. In addition, we pinpoint on a world map the location article chronicles. Of course, we include a vocabulary activity by adding jazzy or unknown words which we discover to our word jar.
