Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
Food for ThoughtThe Kindergarten class used the News Journal in their project approach on restaurants and nutrition. The children used the ad and coupon inserts to research the food they would need to purchase on their trip to the grocery store. They calculated the money they would need to purchase the ingredients for a lunch they were preparing for the K4 class the next day. The K4 class enjoyed the special treat prepared by their friends! The PK 3 class used the News Journal as they searched for pictures of food that they were going to sell in the grocery store they are building in class. The students then searched for the food items at home and brought in the empty containers to stock our "St. James Grocery Store". They also cut out pictures of fruits and vegetables as they learned more about sorting and nutrition. They also cut out any letter that they recognized for a "Look what letters I Know" activity. Construction is underway on the store and the children are looking forwarded to "stocking" the shelves. The K4 and PK4 class used the News Journal to cut out the letters of their name and other words that they know how to spell. They then made a book to take home to their families. The students and their parents were thrilled with all the things they know! Bright Ideas Contest Winner - 2004 Category: K-1 Level Chris Gilbert Early Childhood Director St James Episcopal School
