Snowmen

I am a Kindergarten teacher at Burns at Hill Elementary. During the month of January for our weather I unit I used the newspaper in several ways. The teacher´s guide for Jan/Feb had the suggestion of writing a report of why weather is important to different people. Instead of writing we had a discussion in Kindergarten. Of Course the hurricanes- as much as I hated them- made the discussion very meaningful. The other newspaper activity was a fun activity. I found it in the Teacher-Created Materials Thematic Unit-Weather, but it requires newspaper. The students stuff 3 white trash bags with crumpled newspaper to create the body of the snowman. Then we decided to make this a school snowman, so we used letters as buttons, meter stick as arms, and a mortarboard for his hat. I used the activity as a culminating activity for the weather unit. So that we would each have a snowman to take home, we then stuffed a white paper bag with newspaper and each child got to decorate their snowman as they wanted, using crepe paper scarves, twigs, and construction paper.
