Word Detectives

In my kindergarten class we use the newspaper for learning our sight words. Students look for the mystery word(s) of the day in the paper. The word clue is printed on an index card and placed in the mystery word box. Using a highlighter pen and a magnifying glass students locate as many of the "mystery words" as they can.

We have used this as a team effort as well as an individual task in a center. When used as a team effort that team earns extra reading time or computer time. The students enjoy working together and feel successful as they learn their sight words.

The students´ favorite part of the newspaper of course is the cartoon pages.

Growth is measured when the students begin to recognize more of the required sight words in a variety of print.
