Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
Letters to WinnersWe use The News-Journal in our classroom every week. In the beginning of the year it helps with following directions to just find the correct section and comic strip with my third graders. The students enjoy taking the comics page and using it to make mini paragraphs from the strips. This activity helps them with sentence structure and punctuation skills. I extend it farther by having them add another set of sentences on how they predict the comic strip will end. This helps with reading strategies such as prediction and comprehension. We also write letters to the Medallion of Excellence winners every year and my students are very excited and can´t wait for the end of the year to do this activity. Carol M.
