Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
Across the CurriculumI like to share two ways our class uses The News-Journal in the class room. 1. Why Math?-Helps to connect students to the importance of everyday math. This activity helped bring some excitement to math as well as building my students´ skills needed in reading comprehension as well as computation. Students locate articles that relate to everyday math. They place the ad in a category based on vocabulary, skill or computation that is needed. They must be able to explain what math skill(s) are mentioned or inferred in the article as well as the purpose of the article. Some examples of the students´ work include weather reports, recipes, business editorials, and sales ads. As extra practice the students can rewrite the article to form a question for the class to solve - taking a recipe that serves 2 and making it to serve 4 or what will the temperature be if it were 10 degrees colder in Ohio? 2. Show it. Helps to form a visual image and view vocabulary in a variety of contexts. Each week, as part of the reading lesson, students are to locate a picture or visual representation of vocabulary. Example: a fan cheering at a game can be matched with the vocabulary word, "enthusiasm." They then read the article to see if the vocabulary word was mentioned or if they find a synonym or antonym. This is important because it encourages re-reading that builds fluency and reading for details that builds comprehension. Justina Thomas-Smith 4th Grade Palm Terrace Elementary
