Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
"Station"ary IdeasI am working on my reading endorsement this year, so I have been using a lot of reading strategies. I designed the following activity to incorporate group work, reading fluency practice, and other reading skills. I divided the class into 4 groups of 7 because I only have 7 Timed Reading Plus- workbooks. Each group was to complete the assignment at its station, and then the groups rotate every seven to eight minutes. Three stations had seven copies of the day´s News-Journal, with a different assignment at each. Station 1: Read the assigned reading fluency selection and chart reading time and reading rate after answering comprehension questions. Station 2: Choose any 10 cartoons or comics from The News-Journal comic´s page. On notebook paper, write the title of the cartoon or comic strip, and explain the pun or humor of the comic or cartoon. (This requires understanding inferences and drawing conclusions.) Then write why you chose that comic or cartoon. I found this station actually required the most effort on the students´ part; many did not really understand the humor. Station 3: Choose any news article and write a short summary, including the main idea and the 5w´s (who, what, where, when, why). Station 4: Answer 5 questions from the Sports pages of The News-Journal. These were questions I wrote depending on the day´s news. I chose items that required reading graphs and charts, i.e., batting averages or rankings. (This is to promote chart and graph reading.) My students seemed to enjoy the quick-paced variety of the day. Sarah VanWasshnova English II Spruce Creek High
