Doing What Everyone Else Can Do

I am a Multi VE teacher of children with special needs.

We use the newspapers daily to learn how to locate information using the index, check the weather report, find sports scores, use a TV schedule and learn HOW to turn pages appropriately.

We use pictures to locate certain articles.

The students learn how to use graphs.

We have contests to see who can find things first and scavenger hunts for words or letters.

We orally read and discuss the Mini Page every Monday and use the words in the word search as spelling words.

Many of my students are non-readers, but they can locate the sections by the capital letter for each one.

They look forward to the chapter stories every week like "Brain Freeze" and "Woodrow." These often lead into good discussions of appropriate social skills, often lacking in students with disabilities.

"Reading" a newspaper helps them to feel like they can do something that everyone else can do. They take their copy home at night and have to show or read to their parents at least one thing that we read that day.

I am very grateful for the NIE program that gives these students the opportunity that most never get at home. Thank you.
