Newspaper Delivery Service on Campus

Multi-VE students pick up the newspapers from the teacher workroom in the front office each morning.Newspapers are taken back to the classroom where students sort them into delivery routes. They insert the Neighbors and Go-D0 sections into the newspapers and load them onto carts for delivery. Selected students work on their functional handwriting skills by putting names on newspapers to be delivered to individual staff members on campus. Students receive their delivery assignments and deliver the newspapers to classrooms and individuals. Non-verbal students´ individual communication devices are programmed with appropriate greetings and/or messages to enable them to interact with the newspaper recipients.

Delivering the newspapers to general education classrooms gives the exceptional education students the opportunity to interact with non-disabled peers. Many friendships have been started and maintained as a result of our newspaper delivery service. The students enjoy the interaction with others and also enjoy being out and about on campus. In the afternoons, students collect newspapers in bins and take them outside to the recycle bin.

The delivery and recycle service provides a wonderful opportunity for our Multi-VE students to practice the development of job and work related skills. They are also able to work on the development of social and communication skills while engaging in a productive task.
