Bright Ideas Lesson PlansYou, Too, Can be a Star!I read the story "Stargirl," by J. Spinelli to the class. The main character is an unusual girl who loves to read the fillers in the newspaper about things that happen to people. Stargirl then makes a Hallmark type card for them or gives them a small gift appropriate to the event in their life. I had the students looking for Stargirl type articles in the paper. They then had to either make a card like "Stargirl" would have or tell what kind of gift they would give to the person. It could be events like a discharge from the Armed Services, a graduation, a promotion, an accident, and many little things like someone returning a wallet or helping the community in some way. The class enjoyed looking for the articles and they stumbled across many other interesting articles on their journey through the newspaper.
